Research Notes and Results
The NHL is one of the few American sports leagues that is more Pan-American than just based in the U.S. In fact, 7 of the 30 NHL teams are based in Canada. This means that broadcasting deals for the NHL are pretty much all over the place, leaving a bit of a mixed bag for anyone looking to stream games through Kodi. This also presents a situation where we can present some good news and some bad news.
We’ll go with the bad news first. Most of the American-based broadcasting contracts have gone straight to the NBC Sports Group. NBC signed a 10-year contract with the NHL back in 2011. In case we soon forget, this is the same NBC that made watching the 2016 Olympic games an absolute chore. On a similar note, locating working NBC Sports Network streams on Kodi are often challenging, at in some cases nearly impossible.
Another part of the bad news is that many of the local broadcasting agreements have gone to cable networks that are also difficult to find on Kodi. This includes Fox Sports channels. What this boils down to is an overall difficulty in locating working US streams national NHL games.
The good news is that many of the teams in the league have regional broadcasting agreements with local, over the air broadcasters. And almost every team has broadcasting agreements for local over the air radio networks as well (an area in Kodi that’s highly underused by extremely useful). On an even more positive note, all games are covered on Canadian networks, with many carried the OTA station CBC. Most of the games are contracted out to Rogers Media cable channels, split between FX Canada, City, and Sportsnet
Additionally, some games are getting broadcast on the NHL Network and Telemundo Deportes.
We kept all of the broadcasting contracts in mind when we did our research. Below you’ll find the results of our search for the best streams out there. What we found is that NHL fans are unfortunately mostly ignored when it comes to functioning Kodi applications with NHL streams. The primary television networks covering the games do a rather good job of blocking their content from streamers. That includes Sportsnet. For watching live games, we only one semi-functional option. NHL games do give us a good opportunity to introduce users to Kodi’s music streaming options, where every game is covered.
The best way to watch NHL on Kodi is through pre-recorded game replays. We found several excellent options on that end, which we’ve listed out below.
Live Video Streaming Options
We found that Pro Sport was the best bet for streaming your NHL games. Not only does Pro Sport give you a list of all upcoming live matches, it offers up the start time for those matches as well. Simply hop onto Pro Sport any day, and you’ll see which games are streaming live and at what time. The streams work extremely well and are available in very high quality. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to access any of the live streams while researching (none were playing at the time). Nevertheless, we’ve experienced good results with Pro Sports when we tested its live streaming for other sports that they cover.
VidTime offers up another opportunity to catch some live games. Much like Pro Sport, you’ll find a schedule of current live games for NHL and a specific section just for NHL games. We also found a few working streams for Sportsnet, the Canadian cable network covering NHL games in Canada. The only thing to contend with here is that you may find more nonfunctioning links than you’d prefer, while the menu is a bit funky with the naming. Otherwise, this is a good option, although less desirable than Pro Sport for those hoping to hit up some live options.
Replays and Other Post-Game Materials
You can find this addon in the MetalChris Repository.
NHL Rewind gives you exactly what its name implies. This addon can effectively serve as your single stop for anything and everything related to NHL content. You won’t catch live games here (as evidenced in the title), but you will find everything from post-game interviews, news, NHL-related video content, and even condensed games. The condensed games are a special treat and a somewhat new phenomenon in sports replays, where only the most important and most interesting parts of a game are spliced together to give you a 6-10 minute, all-action experience. Some of the sections on this app are more or less worthless. You’ll find the most interesting and useful content under the NHL.tv tab.
You can find this addon in iCanuk’s Kodi Repository.
We mentioned this addon earlier for its live streaming. We’ll also mention it here as a great source for replays as well. We’ve sung the praises of Pro Sport already in our NFL Replays guide. The good news is that Pro Sport serves up excellent pre-recorded games for NHL fans as well. The games come in stunningly clear and amazingly fast. Furthermore, Pro Sport is simply designed with a good, clean layout and organized very well.
You can find our review and installation guide on Castaway here.
Castaway is still dealing with a host of issues relating to its live streams. Thankfully, it’s still a decent option for those looking for replays on demand. There are two good options in here for that as well. The “Sport on Demand” section has working, good quality streams. Note that fullmatch.tv streams will require you to log into OpenLoad. The login there is free, but you’re limited to how long you can access streams through there. It will also require you to register your IP address, so we highly recommend you make sure you’re connected to a VPN before you do.
Listen to NHL Live on Kodi
Live video streaming options for NHL are not good. However, getting local NHL on the radio is extremely easy. It’s not as preferable as watching live streams, but there are some excellent Kodi addons for radio stations.
You may not actually need another radio addon here. TuneIn pulls in tens of thousands of radio stations, including local stations streaming audio coverage of NHL games. You’ll find every team has its own channel, so finding the games for your favorite teams are extremely easy and very fast. To find them faster, simply type in “NHL” in TuneIn’s search box. You’ll quickly pull up not only a channel specifically for NHL on TuneIn but also a full list of every team in the league. Each team’s section offers up local radio for their games, if available.
