This helpful guide will help you get Kodi installed on any Android Box. From what we’ve seen, there’s no current restriction on your Android version, so chances are good that this installation process should work with all Android boxes.

This includes popular boxes like:

We highly suggest using a VPN to ensure that you remain anonymous while streaming content through Kodi on an Android TV Box. Our personal recommendation for the best Kodi VPN is IPVanish.

A Note on IPVanish

While we recommend IPVanish for streaming through your Android box, it’s good to note here that IPVanish has a helpful Android application that will also work with your box. Simply head to your Google Play store and search “IPVanish”. The app you want is named “IPVanish VPN”. Installation is free, and as long as you have an account, you can use the app just like you would the regular Windows or Mac-based application. All of the same benefits are there, including the kill switch and the proprietary Scramble function.

How to Install Kodi on Any Android TV Box

Step 1: Check for a pre-installed Kodi build–and then delete it

This installation process will be quick and easy. First, turn on your TV box. Your home screen may look different than ours, and that’s ok. For reference, I was using a M8S Android TV Box that came with a factory-installed Kodi build.

Likewise, your Android TV box may actually have come with a version of Kodi already installed.

Unless you purchased a Kodi box with the express purpose of utilizing the special pre-installed build, we fully recommend deleting the pre-installed version. There’s a simple reason for this: malware and ransomware.

Although Android’s version of Kodi runs in a sandbox, pre-installed Kodi builds are simply not to be trusted. Tim Wells over at AndroidPCReview wrote a scathing article on Kodi’s noticeably weak security and the developers’ poor handling of security concerns. It’s a great read and we suggest reading the whole thing for a better understanding of why we recommend VPNs every time.

If your Android TV box has no pre-installed Kodi, or you deleted the addon as suggest, it’s time for step 2.

Step 2: Your easy installation process

  • First, head over to your Google Play store
  • Next, type in “Kodi” in the search bar

Android TV Box Kodi Search

  • On the Kodi app page, click on “Install”

  • You’ll find your Kodi in the applications section of your Android TV box. (In my case, it wasn’t on the home screen until I added it there)
  • Open up your Kodi. You’ll note that the layout is the exact same as what you’ll find on the Mac or Windows version. The current standard build is 16.1 Jarvis with the now standard Confluence skin. If you use Kodi on a Windows or Mac, this should be familiar.

  • From here, the installation process is the same as with other Kodi versions. For example, you may want to head over to Videos > Addons and try installing an addon from the official Kodi repository. This should help you verify that the installation process works, that the media center works, and that your addons will work as intended.
