kodi remotes

Although Kodi TV boxes are popular for watching Kodi, far too many of them come with simple remotes that often don’t work very well. Additionally, few include keyboards, making it cumbersome to install new add-ons or use the Internet browser features often available on many Kodi TV boxes. Using Kodi remotes and keyboards make sense with Kodi boxes, but with all of the low-quality electronics on the market these days, it’s important to get one that actually works.

We’ve done some extensive research into what’s currently available, with our goal to help you filter out the trash from the treasure. You may also find our review on the best Kodi TV boxes for 2017 a useful guide if you’re also looking to invest in a new box.

First, we’d like to provide a quick word on using VPNs with Kodi TV boxes.

Using a VPN with Kodi TV Boxes

On occasion, some ISPs have sent copyright infringement notifications to Kodi users. This is a result of agreements between some content providers and ISPs to monitor web traffic for illegal downloads of copyrighted material. This is particularly a problem with addons that stream TV shows, movies, and sports.

To help keep streaming habits private, we recommend using a VPN. A VPN will encrypt your connection and ensure that no one, including your ISP, can see what you’re streaming through Kodi.

Our personal recommendation for the best Kodi VPN is IPVanish.

IPVanish is an easy-to-use VPN suite that assigns you a new IP address, among many other features. If you do plan on using a VPN with your Kodi TV box, we’ve also provided a guide for how to

Rating and Research Methods

We’re currently working on personally testing as many Kodi TV boxes and Kodi remotes and keyboards as possible. Until then, we’ve conducted extensive online research on remotes and keyboards, looking at the following criteria:

  • Online ratings from customer reviews
  • Online ratings from official reviews
  • Prices
  • Hardware functionality
  • Availability

Taking all of these together for each device, we’ve provided what we believe is a useful list for anyone looking to get the most out of their remote and keyboard purchases.

You’ll find three categories in use here: Applications, Remote/Keyboard Combos and Remotes Only. We left out solitary keyboards. For the most part, you’ll find more value in using a remote or a remote combo than a solitary keyboard.

Remote/Keyboard Combos

#1 iPazzPort Wireless Mini Keyboard

iPazzPort

This attractive piece of hardware is one of several devices that all look surprisingly similar. The keyboard/remote combos are a great way to get the benefit of both worlds — when done correctly, that is. The iPazzPort seems to be one of a few that does get it right. This device is well received on Amazon, with a 4.1 out of 5 stars on the site and over 2,000 customer reviews. Furthermore, the majority of those reviews (over 60%) are 5-star ratings.

This one is designed to work specifically with Android TV boxes and Raspberry Pi. It also includes a touchpad to function as a wireless mouse. You’ll need to use the iPazzPort with a Kodi TV box that has a USB port, however. It does not have a Bluetooth transmitter. Instead, it uses 2.4GHz wireless connection. It’s battery powered, but the battery should last your a good few weeks before you’ll need a recharge.

It’s not without its faults, of course. It isn’t well received on Newegg, where it sits at a 3 out of 5 from customer reviews. A noticeable number of users also report pairing issues, meaning you might find your Kodi TV box just doesn’t support the drivers. Some have suggested using the updated, smaller version. However, that one is not as well received with far more complaints.

You’ll want to make this one a serious contender on your list or potential solutions.

Pros:

  • Extremely functional with a lot of features
  • Full QWERTY keyboard
  • Works with a long list of devices

Cons:

  • Known pairing issues
  • No Bluetooth

#2 Rii i8+ 2.4GHz Mini Wireless Keyboard

Rii i8+

You’re probably looking at this one and wondering how it’s actually different from the iPazzPort device. The truth is, there’s very little difference between the two, either in design or functionality. So why would you want to choose one over the other? Personal preference, maybe. But this version also includes a backlight which some users say makes all the difference for the user experience with this type of device. Neither the iPazzPort and its updated, smaller version include this, which means you may get more value out of the Rii i8+ if you do a lot of TV viewing in the dark of night.

This device has solid Amazon ratings with a straight 4.0 out of 5 and over 500 customer reviews. Half of those reviews are 5s, so that’s a fairly high praise mark for this one. You’ll also find a large number of video reviews and guides on this one. Rule of thumb here: If a lot of people want to make guides on a product, it’s probably because it works well, but may need a bit of finagling to get working perfectly.

That’s the case with this one. You may run into some setup issues, and a lot of users find it better to remap the keys to get the most use out of it. Nevertheless, it’s extremely well-received, and the backlight might make it a better option for you over the iPazzPort. Just note that the update with the backlight makes it slightly more expensive as well.

Pros:

  • Backlit keys
  • Large number of keyboard options
  • QWERTY keyboard setup

Cons:

  • Requires USB port to work
  • No Bluetooth
  • Some known button errors

#3 Aerb 2.4G Mini Wireless Keyboard Mouse

Aerb remote

This surprising entry from a relatively unknown company is getting some high praise for being cheap and useful. A fair number of people who bought this one bought it specifically for using with Kodi on a Kodi TV box or with a Windows-based TV media device. Against all odds, it’s managed to get a 4.1 out of 5 stars on Amazon with over 800 customer reviews, which helps dispel any suspicious that it might be a paid rank.

This one is a bit of a tricky device with a significantly large number of features packed into its small frame. On one side, it looks just like a standard TV remote. Hidden inside of here, however, is the fact that it acts as an air mouse, using a gyroscope sensor to pinpoint its location on your screen. This aspect of it, however, has been known to cause other important key functions to stop working, so some users suggest you may need to actually turn the air mouse off if you want to get better use out of it. And unfortunately, the air mouse feature tends to turn itself back on at times, although you can easily turn it back off.

The backside is where you’ll find the keyboard. It’s a standard QWERTY keyboard, although it lacks some of the function keys you can find on the other combination options on the list. You can pair it with your device with the USB dongle. It’s a 2.4GHz IR device, so you’ll need to make sure your device has a USB port before making your purchase.

Pros:

  • Simple design
  • Excellent features
  • Wide range of functionality with Kodi TV boxes

Cons:

  • Known errors and bugs that have not been fixed
  • Air mouse feature can disable other buttons

Remote Only

#4 Amazon Fire TV Remote

Amazon Fire TV Remote

Perhaps the biggest surprise for anyone with a Kodi TV box is the fact that you can control it with an Amazon Fire TV remote. Amazon sells replacement Fire TV remotes, although the replacements do not come with a voice option. However, there’s a good chance you can find the voice-enable one without having to purchase the whole Fire TV. Indeed, you can find the newly updated Alexa version, although this one actually has lower ratings than the replacement Fire TV remote.

The Fire TV remote has a solid 4.4 out of 5 on Amazon with over 1,000 customer reviews. Needless to say, there’s little chance of those positive reviews being paid reviewers either. Amusingly, most of the negative reviews are not for the replacement remote, but for the remote that comes with the Fire TV purchase.

The functions on this one are fairly simple. You can cycle forward and back and select items. This one only works with a Bluetooth connection, so if you don’t have a TV box with Bluetooth, you may need to look elsewhere. Or combine it with a Bluetooth dongle, if and only if your Kodi TV box works with a Bluetooth dongle.

Pros:

  • A cheap alternative
  • Works with Bluetooth boxes

Cons:

  • Limited features
  • Most buttons don’t work on Kodi

#5 ANEWISH Replacement Remote Control

ANEWISH remoteANEWISH makes a very simple remote control replacement for some of the more popular Kodi TV Boxes. However, it does come with some significant restrictions. ANEWISH explains that you can only use it with the following boxes: MXQ, MXQ PRO, M8, T95M, T95N, T95X. The company is fairly good at responding to inquiries, most of which relate to which devices the remote will work with. People tend to the get same answers (e.g., the list of devices that the company provides on their Amazon page). In fact, several of the negative reviews are people who bought it without reading what it works for, then left angry reviews of it not working.

You’ll find this remote has a solid 4 out of 5 rating. The remote options are limited. It’s not much beyond a standard TV remote, but it’ll get the job done if you’re not looking for anything particularly fancy and you already own one of the aforementioned boxes.

Pros:

  • Simple and functional
  • Inexpensive

Cons:

  • Works with a limited number of Kodi boxes

Best Kodi Remotes and Keyboards 2016

Applications

#1 Yatse

Yatse

Call this one a bit of an unconventional selection, but Yatse is continually rated as one of the best Kodi remotes around. The only thing about this option? It’s not a physical remote, but an Android app that you can download from the Google Play store.

Yatse is about as fully-featured as it gets for a Kodi remote. We’ll avoid listing the dozens of features available on this app, instead giving you the most important ones. This application can:

  • Stream your Kodi media to your UPnP, AirPlay or Chromecast devices
  • Use voice commands
  • Volume control
  • Custom commands

That said, there are limitations on this one. It’s limited to only those who have Android smartphones. It’s also limited to only Kodi boxes that are running a version of Android that accepts Chromecast. Without those, you’re a bit out of luck with this one. If the stars have aligned and you have all the things you need to make this one work, you may not need any other options. Given that this one is completely free, it makes it a great option for those who can use it. A Play Store rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars across more than 50,000 reviews and 1 million downloads is a rather strong support for it. That, and you’ll find a large number of forum posters praising its name.

Pros:

  • Strong functionality
  • Extremely large number of features
  • Free
  • Supports Wake-on-LAN

Cons:

  • Only works with Android and Kodi boxes that use Chromecast
  • Somewhat lengthy setup

#2 Kore Remote

Kore

The Kore is the official Kodi remote. It’s developed by the XBMC Foundation, meaning this application is both free, and designed specifically for Kodi functionality. As this application works similarly to Yatse, there’s not too much for us to say about it, other than the fact that it can’t do as much as Yatse. There’s also no Chromecast connection on this one, so its usefulness is going to be severally limited to devices that utilize Wake-on-LAN as well. Considering it’s free, you may want to try it just in case, but if you’re determined to use an app remote you may want to stick with Yatse.

Pros:

  • Useful suite of features
  • Free
  • Official XBMC Foundation app

Cons:

  • No Chromecast integration
  • Limited usefulness
